British Columbia Christian Academy opened its doors in September 1992 when a group of Christian families shared the vision for an independent Christian school in the Tri-Cities area. Initially, several classrooms at the old Burnaby North High School were leased to teach a handful of high school students.
There were many hurdles in the early stages. Facilities, staffing, equipment and parent support were all integral to BC Christian Academy becoming firmly rooted. Despite the tough challenges those families endured, they strongly believed God would bless their desire for an independent Christian school.
[BC Christian Academy Old School Site] In 1993, a full range of classes from Kindergarten to Grade 12 were established and the Ministry of Education granted BC Christian Academy the Group 1 Independent School status. Enrolment grew from 70-170 students. From 1993 – 2000, the school leased church space in the City of Coquitlam, first at Eagleridge Bible Fellowship Church and then at the Coquitlam Christian Centre Church. In the summer of 2000, the Foreign Studies Program was first launched. Between 2001 and 2004, the Out-Of-School Care, Pre-school and the Group Daycare were established. In 2002, summer camps began which offered academic, fine arts, computer courses, and sports camps.
From 2000 to 2008, The BC Christian Academy leased a portion of the old Terry Fox High School in Port Coquitlam. The school grew and developed and enrollment reached a peak of 266 students in 2004.
In 2003, BC Christian Academy purchased 9.4 acres along Hazel Drive on Burke Mountain in the City of Coquitlam, with the intent of developing its new Burke Mountain Campus in the future.
[BC Christian Academy News Clipping] In June 2008, BC Christian Academy leased the former Lincoln Elementary public school facility at 1019 Fernwood Avenue in Port Coquitlam. The school finally had a facility where they could grow the school to support the expanding student body.
Indeed, God has truly blessed BC Christian Academy. Enrollment has grown dramatically with now over 300 students and lives at the school are being transformed and impacted daily for Christ! New programs are being developed and the school’s Strategic Planning Committee is working intently for the next stage of development which will include newly constructed facilities to handle the rapidly growing student population.
BC Christian Academy continues to be firmly rooted and faithfully growing in its mission of equipping students to impact the world for Jesus.
