Arena Marble & Granite Shares Countertop Maintenance Secrets

Reza Khoylou, of Arena Marble & Granite, lists the top three tips on how to best care for marble and granite.

NEWBURY PARK, CALIF.

Natural stone and quartz countertops are high-end materials, and should be treated as such. “Unfortunately, many people do not know how to properly care for them,” said Khoylou, founder of Arena Marble & Granite, which specializes in natural stone, quartz and porcelain.

To educate people on proper maintenance of of their countertops, Khoylou lists the following three tips:

No. 1: Seal it. “By sealing natural stone you will help keep off stains,” noted Khoylou. “Keep in mind that when water no longer beads, it’s time to reseal your stone countertops. Furthermore, if you have marble counters in your kitchen, always use coasters, cutting boards etc., as marble scratches and stains easily. Quartz are man-made products and generally do not require sealing. Having said that, I should also inform you that, today, there are quartz sealers in the market and it would be an excellent practice if you seal your quartz as well. The non-polished quartz surfaces must be sealed.”

No. 2: Clean properly. When cleaning natural stone surfaces, it is imperative to never use acidic or abrasive cleaners. “Instead, use a little elbow grease with a damp mop or sponge or use special cleaners that do not damage the beauty of your natural stone,” added Khoylou. “You should also vacuum or sweep up loose dirt. For quartz surfaces, use quartz cleaners that usually come in a spray bottle and available from your quartz supplier.”

No. 3: Spot treat. Using a poultice paste has been known to remove even the stubbornest stains. “For maximum effectiveness, spread it onto the stain, then cover it with plastic wrap sealed with painters’ tape,” concluded Khoylou. “Once it’s dry you should scrape the paste off and wipe it with a damp cloth.” If the stain persists, please call a professional to treat the spot. Some stains are easier to treat than others and there isn’t a single magical way that would work for all. Please keep in mind that all available countertop products (natural stone, quartz, porcelain, etc.) are stain resistant, not stain proof.
