Attorney Toni Jaramilla Enlightens Employees about their Rights

The event was held on Saturday, November 21, 2015, and was sponsored by Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Asian Pacific American Bar Association, California Employment Lawyers Association’s (CELA’s) Diversity Outreach Committee and Worker Outreach Committee and the Mexican American Bar Association. At the event, experienced attorneys, such as Jaramilla, were on hand to discuss the laws that prohibit discrimination, harassment and retaliation, and laws about unpaid overtime, meal and rest breaks and other laws that an employer has to follow.

“I was involved because I am a member of CELA’s Diversity Outreach Committee,” said Jaramilla, a past chair and current board member of CELA. “With this committee, along with the Worker Outreach Committee, we are outreaching to workers in our diverse communities to teach them about their rights as employees.”

The “Know Your Rights” clinic taught the law by presenting skits of workplace situations; for example, the volunteer lawyers, including Jaramilla, acted out a woman being sexually harassed, one where a person complained about being treated unfairly and was threatened with termination, and another scenario where an employee was being bullied in the workplace. Following the event, attendees had the opportunity to speak confidentially with an attorney about any questions they had regarding the law free of charge.

“I spoke to a woman who had disability work restrictions from her doctor and I helped her fill out forms so she could get the accommodations in her workplace and still be able to perform her job duties,” said Jaramilla. “It was a very educational and uplifting event and we hope to continue sponsoring it. Those who attended the clinic expressed their gratitude and desire for future programs.”
