Center for Surrogate Parenting Examines Egg and Embryo Freezing

Karen Synesiou, CEO of the Center for Surrogate Parenting, Inc., lists the top five tips regarding egg and embryo freezing for intended parents and surrogate mothers.

ENCINO, CA

Egg freezing and embryo freezing are both excellent ways to preserve fertility and create life. Although frozen embryos have a slight statistical advantage for live births, frozen eggs offer many advantages, depending on life circumstances.

“Egg freezing is a wonderful opportunity for women undergoing medical treatment or who are concerned about the decline of their fertility as the aging process occurs,” said Hilary Hanafin, Ph.D., Chief Counselor for Counseling Associates, a Center for Surrogate Parenting (CSP) affiliate, who has counseled CSP intended parents and surrogate mothers for over 30 years. “Women who know who the genetic father is going to be or who are comfortable choosing a sperm donor should consider fertilizing some of their eggs to create embryos along with egg freezing.”

Regarding egg and embryo freezing, Karen Synesiou, CEO of CSP who is also responsible for the overall management of its surrogacy program, lists the following five tips:

No. 1: Freeze 50% of eggs and create frozen embryos with the other 50%. “For example, a 30-year-old couple working on their education who will not want children in the next two years should freeze 50% of their eggs and create frozen embryos with the other 50%,” noted Synesiou.

No. 2: Freeze 100% of eggs. “A 30-year-old single woman should absolutely freeze her eggs in order to preserve her fertility,” stressed Synesiou.

No. 3: Create embryos. A 38- or 40-year-old couple should create embryos because the more those eggs are touched the greater the chance of causing harm to the eggs.

No. 4: Those undergoing cancer treatment. A good option for anyone who is about to undergo cancer treatment should freeze their eggs to preserve their fertility for a later time.

No. 5: Those taking strong medication. “Anyone who has been advised that taking strong medication may affect their fertility should freeze their eggs,” concluded Synesiou.
