Colorado Realtor Terry Naber Collecting Donations for Domestic and Sexual Abuse Victims

In the United States, more than 1 in 3 women (35.6%) and more than 1 in 4 men (28.5%) report having experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime, and approximately 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner. In Colorado Springs alone 35 domestic violence calls are made every day to the police. 

To help victims of these crimes, Naber is collecting urgent needs for TESSA, which empowers victims of partner and sexual violence to take back the life that is rightfully theirs, as women and children who seek shelter at TESSA arrive with very little. Items needed include razors, sunscreen, baby wipes, deodorant, shaving cream, body wash, diapers (sizes 4 and 5) and lawn-sized trash bags. Donations can be made at Naber’s office, 1740 Chapel Hills Drive, Colorado Springs, CO. 

“TESSA is near and dear to my heart because of the number of women I’ve known who have been in abusive relationships, and who have been helped by their services,” said Naber. “However, I have also seen so many who did not know about TESSA stay far too long with a dangerous, controlling, abusive partner.”

A close friend of Naber’s was in an abusive marriage for over 30 years. TESSA’s hotline and counseling service helped her to understand that she was not to blame for her abuser’s anger and abuse, no matter what he told her. TESSA also helped her to map out an escape plan when the abuse intensified. “She was able to regain her self-esteem to the point that she gained the courage and resources to break free permanently from the relationship,” noted Naber.  

One of TESSA’s main goals is to help eradicate domestic abuse. In addition to its safehouse, TESSA offers a 24-hour confidential crisis line, counseling, legal aid, programming for children, and outreach programs and presentations in the community. If necessary they also assist in helping victims change their identity.

“Several years ago I headed a volunteer project to turn a storage room in their safehouse into a dormitory to create more beds,” added Naber. “Our group of volunteers obtained donated materials and funds and also donated our labor, not only to create the new dormitory but to remodel a bath and re-landscape the backyard to make it safe for children. This project  was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, knowing that I had played a small part in helping survivors and their children create new lives and possibly even saving lives.” 

Now Naber is paying it forward again with her donation drive and giving others the opportunity to feel that they can also have a part in saving lives.
