Omega Family Global Dispels Common Surrogacy Myths

Becoming a surrogate can be one of the most rewarding decisions a person can make. After all, a surrogate helps a couple or individual create the family for which they have longed.

“However, many women who want to become a surrogate and couples and individuals wanting to create a new life are scared off due to myths about surrogacy,” said Dr. Kyle Kramer, co-founder of Omega Family Global, which exists to make new family creation straightforward and as easy as possible, while being legally protected.  

To educate women contemplating becoming a surrogate and couples and individuals that want to start a family, Dr. Kramer dispels the following three surrogacy misconceptions:

No. 1: Surrogates are only in it for the money. “Although surrogates are compensated for their help, the mission of surrogacy is to be helpful to those that need a family but can’t give it to themselves, and that is why most women become surrogates,” stressed Dr. Kramer, a member of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. “Keep in mind that the surrogate is the one who faces all the health risks and gives up nine months of her life to carry someone else’s baby.”

No. 2: The surrogate will keep the baby and seek parental custody. This is a common and natural concern, but in reality, there is very little to fear. In fact, the rate of surrogate mothers that have tried to change their minds in the 30-year history of surrogacy in the United States is one-tenth of 1%. “Furthermore, surrogacy contracts are quite binding in nature, so if a surrogate did change her mind there would be very little legal recourse on her part,” added Dr. Kramer.

No. 3: It’s difficult to give up the baby. Because the baby is not biologically connected to the surrogate, she is never giving up anything. It is the intended parents’ baby. “Remembering this is very, very helpful when it does come the time of the delivery because that’s really the moment that the surrogate gets in the surrogacy for,” concluded Dr. Kramer. “You wanted to be pregnant and this happened, but the goal of the pregnancy is the delivery, which is really what surrogacy is all about, and that means giving. It does not mean giving up, but giving the dream to the family.”
