Utah Immigration Attorney Vinh K. Ly Provides Pro Bono Consultations to DREAMers

Due to the Trump administration’s decision to rescind the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, immigration attorney Vinh K. Ly recently provided pro bono legal consultations at the Mexican Consulate in Salt Lake City to assist DREAMers, those protected under DACA. Ly, as well as other immigration attorneys, also helped DACA recipients renew their status applications.

DACA is a federal government program created in 2012 to allow people brought to the US illegally as children the temporary right to live, study, and work legally in America. According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, it is only adjudicating DACA renewal requests received by October 5, 2017, from current beneficiaries whose benefits will expire between September 5, 2017, and March 5, 2018.

“These young men and women were brought here as infants or toddlers; they are innocent and deserve to be helped as a matter of principle,” said Ly, a Vietnam native who has worked to make the processes of obtaining visas, green cards, and citizenship easier by applying his background and knowledge to clients’ situations.

Ly and other immigration attorneys assisting DACA recipients at the Mexican Consulate also focused on determining the feasibility of renewing the benefit and assessing possible access to “migratory adjustment or relief.”

“Legal processes associated with your legal status in the United States can be overwhelming,” concluded Ly, who faced many of the same challenges, frustrations, and roadblocks immigrants face today when he came to America from Vietnam as a refugee in the 1970s more than four decades ago. “I understand the fears, concerns, and hopes of people wanting to live, study, work in, or become citizens of the United States, and I want to help ease the process.”
