Eskaton Examines Activities of Daily Living and the Needs of Seniors

Eskaton, a non-profit community-based organization serving seniors in the Greater Sacramento area for 50 years, is reaching out to family caregivers and children of older adults to offer education and support. Classes and support groups include a four-part series, "Caring for Senior Loved Ones," geared toward children of older adults who are caring for a parent and people caring for a spouse or loved one.

“One area that needs education is around Activities of Daily Living, also known as ADLs,” said Dr. Teri Tift, executive director of quality and compliance for Eskaton. “ADLs are routine tasks people do on a daily basis. For many people, ADLs become more difficult with age, but it does not mean that everyone will require assistance as they grow older.”

The six most common ADLs are bathing, toileting, dressing, eating, personal hygiene and mobility. “As an adult child, it may be difficult to imagine helping a parent on and off the toilet,” explains Tift. “The good news is there are so many resources available to help families in these types of situations.”
