Dr. Veronica Anderson Breaks Down the Do’s and Don’ts of Dollar Store Shopping

Doctor, author and speaker Veronica Anderson appears on Good Morning Washington to discuss healthy shopping habits in dollar stores.

Newtown, PA

Dollar stores proliferate across the United States. They are bastions of savings, but are they costing you your health? According to Dr. Anderson, an integrative and intuitive physician and wellness expert, they can if you are not careful.

When shopping at a dollar store, it’s easy to get over-excited about savings and fill one’s cart absentmindedly. However, it would behoove consumers to first read the label on any item. There are certain words that shoppers want to look for on packaging and if they have these words, they should avoid it, such as Triclosan.

“Triclosan is one of the antimicrobials, and those antimicrobials disrupt your hormones,” stressed Dr. Anderson in the Good Morning Washington interview. “There’s a lot of things in products that disrupt your hormones, and that’s a big deal.”

According to Dr. Anderson, when people get disruptive hormones they get brain fog, libido problems, things they don’t know how to deal with. Products at a dollar store that might cause this, and need to be avoided, include toothpaste, soap, and especially deodorants that have aluminum in them, as they have been associated with cancer, specifically breast cancer.

“Do not buy vitamins and supplements because you want to know what’s in them, and if they’re not NSF-certified you don’t know what’s on the bottle is in the bottle,” advised Dr. Anderson. The other area to avoid at a dollar store is cleaning products, as they contain perfumes and dyes that absorb into the skin. Some of these have also been associated with cancers and hormonal problems. As for products consumers should look for at a dollar store, these include dried fruits and nuts, bottled water and sea salt, as well as low-sodium products, such as canned fruits, beans, veggies and fish.

“The big one that I really like are what are called the ‘SMASH fish,’ which are high in omega-3s,” concluded Dr. Anderson. “SMASH fish include salmon, mackerel, anchovies, sardines and herring. They have the mackerel in the can, they have the sardines and there was a good variety of those. I was very excited about that. I was looking to see, Can I make a whole meal in here? And yes, you can get a whole meal that’s healthy for your family, including the snacks in the dollar store.”
