Hooked Up Charters’ Captain Michael Thomas Debunks Boating Superstitions

Captain Michael Thomas, of the popular Alabama deep sea fishing operation Hooked Up Charters, dispels the top five boating misconceptions often heard onboard.

ORANGE BEACH, ALA.

In the three decades of offshore, nearshore and Back Bay deep sea fishing tripsHooked Up Charters has provided for tourists and locals alike, from a simple ecotour to taking the crew out for a full fishing experience. The Alabama coast charter service has heard all of the superstitions associated with boating. Captain Michael Thomas dispels these top boating myths:

No. 1: Bananas on the boat. Somehow, even in the age of Google, many believe that bringing bananas on a boat brings bad luck to all aboard. Going back to the 1700’s, legend has it that bringing bananas on board will lead to difficulty finding fish, finding their destination and even sinking with their doomed crew. “The truth is, bananas make a great snack for the time at sea,” said Captain Thomas.

No. 2: Whistling is bad luck. “Although most of the music references we hear from young passengers include ‘I’m on a Boat’ and other pop tracks, we also get our fair share of whistles, immediately followed up with a laugh,” noted Captain Thomas. “The tale goes that if one whistles while onboard, they could be asking for fierce storms ahead. Rest assured, this tall tale is nothing more than that.”

No. 3: Beards and tattoos for good luck. It’s believed that abstaining from shaving one’s meticulously maintained beard will create the best luck while aboard. In addition, if passengers have tattoos, the journey will be an even better experience. “While there are many friends who rock quite the amazing beard or interesting tribal tattoo, it’s safe to say the journey will be a blast with or without a beard or tattoos,” claimed Captain Thomas.

No. 4: Commence the journey with champagne. Most have probably seen this in favorite movies over the decades, the captain is soon to begin the journey and smashes a bottle of wine or champagne against the bow. If the bottle doesn’t break, well then there’s some bad luck ahead. “Personally, I’d rather enjoy that bottle with my crew after catching a couple dozen varieties of fish that day,” added Captain Thomas.

No. 5: Waving goodbye. Many superstitious boat-goers have long abided by the rule of not having loved ones wave goodbye or call out one’s name when ready to depart. “Though it is believed doing so brings bad luck, this is clearly not true, and it’s OK to wish your friends and family a safe and happy trip,” concluded Captain Thomas.
