How to Make your Networking Count, Advice from Accountant Aaron Albucher

Networking is the best way to make connections to benefit one’s business. “However, networking can be intimidating,” said Albucher. “Fortunately, there are ways to easily network, including the following five.”

No. 1: Make a plan. Search the internet for networking events near you. “You can focus on attending meetings with businesses in the same niche, or you can attend a meeting for a business that might need your service. For example, an accountant can attend a meeting for small businesses and introduce himself there,” noted Albucher. “Add these meetings to your calendar and set a goal to go to one a week.”

No. 2: Do an educational program locally. Libraries, schools, colleges, and networking events all need people with expertise to give talks to fill their programming schedule. “If you feel this would be a good fit for your business, ask around, teach a free class, and connect with potential leads,” added Albucher.

No. 3: Never leave home without business cards. “Do you ever wonder why business cards haven’t fallen out of fashion? It’s because they work,” stressed Albucher. “Whenever you go out, make sure you have a good supply of business cards to distribute. You never know when small talk could lead to a sale or an important connection.”

No. 4: Connect with your customers’ networks. Ask your clients to introduce you, and your business, to their customers and clients. They might be able to make a great connection for you.

No. 5: Listen, ask questions and keep it casual. “There’s nothing worse than someone who doesn't listen and is trying to push their business on you at a function. Relax, have fun and don’t be too pushy,” advised Albucher. “People like to do business with people they can connect with, so show them you are caring and considerate by listening and asking them about themselves. And keep in touch, as networking doesn’t stop after the event is over. You need to take the time to reach out and touch base with people after the event. Someone might not need your services now but that could change in the future.”
