Louisville Attorney Sharon Handy Elected Chair of  Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana

Attorney Sharon Handy, of Seiller Waterman LLC, was recently elected as board chair for the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana (GSK).

Louisville, KY

Handy was elected for a three-year term, and was chosen because of her board experience and long-time support and dedication to the Girl Scout mission. “Girl Scouts is by far the biggest on-ramp for girls to the outdoors, civic engagement, leadership development and hands on STEM starting at K5 and progressing up through high school with age appropriate skills and challenges all along the way,” Handy said.

According to the group’s own national data, Girl Scouts are almost twice as likely as non–Girl Scouts to participate in STEM (60% versus 35%) and outdoor activities (76% versus 43%). In leadership and civic engagement 72% of current female senators, 58% of women serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, 5 of 9 female governors, and all 3 female secretaries of state are Girl Scout alums.

Through the Kentuckiana council, Handy says girls can experience outdoor adventures like archery, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, high ropes, rock climbing, bouldering, camping, hiking and orienteering. In STEM, girls can can, for example, earn their Aviation badge through a program designed by GSK volunteer Terri Sanders and UPS Captain Terri Donner that is put on each year in collaboration with an international organization of licensed women pilots.

Girls can also experience outdoor science and math education, travel the Universe (without leaving Louisville), learn about space exploration, solve real-world problems and practice the skills utilized by astronauts, scientists, and engineers, earn cybersecurity badges—and so much more. As board chair Handy will preside over all meetings of the council, the board of directors (BOD) and executive committee. She will also be responsible for seeing that the lines of direction given by the delegate assembly and the actions of the BOD are put into effect.

The Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana consists of approximately 10,000 Girl Scouts, 5,000 adult volunteers, and 65 staff that covers 64 counties in Kentucky and Indiana. The mission of the Girl Scouts is to build courage, confidence and character in girls who can make the world a better place.

Handy is also a recipient of the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana Tough Cookie award. This prestigious award is presented to outstanding women who embody courage, confidence and character while supporting Girl Scouting, young women and the community.

In addition to her role within the Girl Scouts, Handy recently received the 2019 Service Above Self Gold Leaf Volunteer Recognition from the Jeffersonville Rotary Club, and served  as one of three representatives from the Friends of the Ohio River Greenway Board on the planning committee for Le Tour de Greenway. This was the inaugural showcase event, held on May 11, to celebrate and promote usage and support of the recently completed Ohio River Greenway -- a 7.5-mile multi-use pathway (walking, jogging, biking) that stretches from the Sherman Minton Bridge in New Albany, IN, through Clarksville, past the Big 4 Bridge in Jeffersonville and ends at Jeffboat.

“Le Tour de Greenway was family-friendly and free for all who participated,” concluded Handy. “It included bouncy rides, food trucks and music at one major stop in each of the three cities.”
