New Era Group Partners with Period Kits to Provide Dignity and Health to Individuals Struggling to Meet Basic Needs

The New Era Group recently hosted a donation drive for Period Kits to provide a 90-day supply of period products to people experiencing homelessness, unstable housing, and extreme poverty in Denver. The New Era team collected over 10,000 tampons, 7,000 pads, 3,500 wipes, 1,700 pairs of underwear and 5,000 panty liners to help fill the kits.  Contributors included BootayBag, Spire Financial, and Your Castle Real Estate.

“We are also very proud that New Era Group will become a permanent drop-off location for Period Kits, which recently obtained its 503c status so the organization can now accept cash donations,” said John Stegner, Realtor and owner of New Era Group at Your Castle Real Estate. “However, our efforts were just a short-term boost for this wonderful and unique charity that is trying to address an ongoing need. We hope to inspire other organizations to get involved and challenge themselves to do a drive far more successful than our own. Better yet, we hope other organizations will pledge ongoing support, which would be the real win here.”  

Alexis Bergelt, the agent who brought this charity to the attention of the team, was moved by a number of experiences during the drive. Bergelt shared one of these moments when describing a shopping trip to purchase supplies: “With the combined cash donations we received, we did a shopping trip at Target. The management and staff were interested in the loads of products we had in our basket. We explained the cause, and brought several people to tears. Some had personal stories about how this affected them. It was amazing to see the need and the support in the community.”

Period Kits envisions a world where anyone who has a period has dependable, consistent access to the products they need when they need them. The non-profit also  partners with local businesses, such as the New Era Group, churches and community organizations to raise awareness around this need by holding collection drives and fundraising events.

New Era Group agents hosted donation drives in their neighborhoods across Denver. Afterwards, they pooled their resources for a Period Kit build event where they assembled more than 260 kits. Each kit contains 40 tampons, 20 pads, 20 liners, a pack of wipes and 6 pairs of underwear. The New Era Group also took a few of the kits from the build day to hand out themselves. “It is one thing to do a drive and collect supplies from those able to give; it is another to hear the stories of those in need when you provide them with the much-needed supplies,” noted Bergelt. “It is heartbreaking, and you walk away determined to get more kits out there.”

Added Stegner, who also pledged to do a yearly drive and build event for Period Kits, “There was an article in the Denver Post about our drive that prompted members of the community to mail and drop off supplies at our office. It was wonderful to see how the community responded and we want to continue to be part of the solution.”

Period Kits wants to thank John, Lexi and the whole team at the New Era Group. Because of their efforts, the 260 recipients of these kits will have some dignity, and piece of mind knowing that some of their basic needs will be met. They won’t have to use newspaper, an old T-shirt, or any other unsanitary options.
